Mining Comic Books, another story about selling old, and vintage comics, including Golden Age comic books, Silver Age Comic Books, Bronze Age Comic Books, and Modern comic books, August 2014 pages 20-21. Here are the dates for the ages of comic books;  Golden Age (1938-1950), the Silver Age (1956-1970), the Bronze Age (1970-1985), and the Modern Age (1985-Present). This article compares selling comic books to mining and points out that you would not just fire up D9 caterpillar and start removing rock to see if there was any gold below, you would look for indicator rocks and maybe even drill a few test holes before spending a lot of time and money digging for gold. Likewise, you would be wise to not just look randomly through a large comic book collection and look up every book (that could take months and months) but you would be wise to narrow your focus to older comic books, and certain types of comic books (at least at first). You can easily sort out the books that are most likely to have the highest value by the cover price, with the Golden Age comics having the lowest cover prices. If you have a Golden Age comic book the cover price will be 10¢. If you have a collection of old comic books, and want to find out what the old comic books value and there are a lot of 10¢ books, you are looking at a collection (assuming the condition is in the upper grades) that could have significant value. When the cover price is 12¢ you are now looking at a Silver Age comic. If the price is between 12¢ and 20¢, you most likely have a Silver Age comic book. A Silver Age comic book can still be incredible valuable. Bronze Age comics tend to run from 15¢ to 40¢ and can still have some value, but the odds of that happening are less than with a Silver Age comic or a Golden age comic. Remember, the older a comic book, and the better the condition, the greater the odds that is will have value. That’s not to say that certain key issues (a particularly collectible book that is a first issue, or the first time a certain hero, or villain appears in a comic book, or even the first time someone wore a special costume, or perhaps someone died, etc.) won’t still have value. This article just covered the basics of how to establish if a comic book collection might have some value, and which old or vintage comic books might have value. Many of the comic books in this auction were comic books that were graded by the Certified Guarantee Corporation (CGC). Books graded by the CGC are often referred to as a CGC comic, and CGC comics and due to the plastic cases that such comics are ensconced in they, are often called slabbed comics.

This article was about auctioneer ethics and featured an interview with Tina Weiman about our million dollar comic book auction and the seller offering to sell us his collection for $5,000 early in our appointment with him. Tina goes on to explain how she turned down the Seller’s offer to buy the collection because she was wearing her auctioneer’s hat, not her buyers hat. This was the first old or vintage comic book collection we had ever sold at auction, and we set 592 world records for prices achieved at auction in this sale. We did a great job marking this collection of Golden Age comics, Silver Age comics, Bronze Age comics, and Modern comics. Here is a link to the tv coverage that came about because of a press release we wrote that was covered by the St. Louis Post Dispatch, then picked up by AP, then Channel 2 in St. Louis, and eventually CNN. Here is a video testimonial we got from our seller in this auction. If you have a collection of old comic books for sale, or need to know the value of vintage comic books, wouldn’t you want to deal with an auctioneer that would treat you ethically?

KAPOW! How To Maximize Comic Books At Auction
December 2018, January 2019 pages 58-61. This article was taken from a class about selling comic book collections that our auctioneer taught at the 2017 National Auctioneers Association’s Conference and Show. Besides covering the aforementioned Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age and Modern Age comic book categories, the class delved into things like how who owned the comic books and how that can affect the collection value. The class also covered comic book condition, things like pedigree (when a collection is from a single owner, has a large number of high grade books, and meets other conditions). For more information about what the CGC’s requirements are for a pedigree and a list of the current CGC pedigree collections, use this link. The CGC books that were in a pedigree collection receive a gold label that shows the book was part of a comic book collection with a pedigree. The class and this article also covers things like comic book condition, comic grading, shipping vintage and old comic books and insuring rare vintage comic books.
